The centre for asylum-seeker “Saint Elisabeth Haus” (Belgian Red Cross) is located in Manderfeld (german speaking community) of Belgium, near the german border. The centre accommodates up to 176 inhabitants of different cultures, nationalities and religions. They request for asylum. The centre is managed by the Belgian Red Cross, all over the world well-known for its humanitarian commitment. The 7 principles of the Red Cross are as follows: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntariness, Unity and Universality. Since 1st December 1989 the Belgian Red Cross has been commissioned by the federal state to take an active part in asylum. There are 18 Red Cross Arrival Centres with a capacity of +/- 3800 places for asylum-seekers in the south part of Belgium. The Red Cross tasks consist in material aid as well as helping of refugees in their difficult life situation. The main aim is to offer a safe place to the inhabitants during their procedure. 21 persons are employed in Manderfeld. Another important task of the house is to assist the residents in daily life to facilitate integration. Activities like sport, culture e.g. language, computer courses and long-term projects are well appreciated.
