Old and New, a Discovery of our Cultural heritage and Future
Start date: May 1, 2015, End date: Mar 1, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Old and new, a Discovery of our Cultural heritage and Future is a program that wants to show the trainees that today is a product from the past. That values, believes and assumptions fuel and have influence on culture is something trainees will discover during the program. This summer there will be an international exchange on board of the Tall Ship Morgenster. 38 trainees from Norway, Denmark, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands will set sail from Kristiansand (Norway) to Rostock (Germany) via Aalborg (Denmark). Sail training (one of the activities in the exchange) teaches us the ancient, traditional knowledge of sailing. The trainees will be involved in all aspects of operating the vessel, setting the sails, steering, being the lookout, navigating and housekeeping. The tasks are challenging and all participants will cross personal boundaries and being all together in this new, challenging environment enables the trainees to develop in a lot of different ways. It is also one of the best surroundings for out theme and learn about each other’s cultural differences and similarities. The real life task enables the trainee not only to talk about cultural and personal differences, but also to experience it in everything happening on board. We will live in close quarters and for all tasks a team is needed. This can be very challenging. You need teamwork to sail a Tall Ship. We will sail for more than 24 hours, the crew and participants will be split up in watches. Each watch will be responsible for sailing the vessel a couple hours a day. The watches will consist out of 12 trainees, at least 2 from each nationality. They will become a close group, depending on each other for safety and survival. Whilst sailing they can practice leadership, communication skills and they will do this in a cultural diverse surrounding. Meaning: taking the different needs personally and culturally in account. The trainees have built a whole set of additional activities to explore. They have some freedom and work methods to enhance the leaning process. These activities vary from debates about democratic values connected with freedom, freedom to choose who you want to be, looking into the maritime history of the countries and connecting that to the development of our society. Within the work methods, reflection on the learning process is very important. Short evaluations each day after the watch will make sure that everybody is aware of their learning experience and process. The process of how the group is learning and it will make sure that the negativity in a group will not stay there for long. The ultimate goal is to create a solid group who can depend on each other while sailing this Tall Ship. The trainees will learn that they have to listen to each other and respect each other in order to create an smooth running team. These trainees are going on a life changing international exchange.
