OFD Summer Camp Revisited
Start date: Aug 1, 2013,

OFD Summer Camp Revisited 2013: The project is focused on recruiting and training young volunteers and empowering them to develop a summer camp to be held in September 2013.The project develops over 3 phases:Phase 1 - New volunteer recruitment + trainingPhase 2 - Summer campPhase 3 - Wrap-up, evaluation & disseminationOFD summer camp is an informal education experience, whereby youths create, develop and run a project entirely by themselves. OFD's primary focus is promoting friendship through diversity, a theme which cuts across the whole project. OFD will recruit 15 volunteers from different social backgrounds, and will open applications to children from local, migrant, expatriate and refugee communities. The summer camp will have 4 main objectives:1. To involve young volunteers in a project which provides them with the opportunity to discover project management and implementation through hands-on work.2. To connect youths and children from different backgrounds within an environment that fosters mutual exchange of learning.3. To create a project in which youth participate in promoting the values of diversity and social inclusion.4. To create an impacting experience for young volunteers, children and families alike- The preparation phase of the project, which may include recruitment of international volunteers, will take place in the months leading to the full launch of the project on the 1st of August.- 1st August to 1st September will involve the creation of partnerships, camp promotion, further volunteer recruitment and training, and in-depth development of camp activities.- 2nd September to 13th September: Summer Camp involving 30 young volunteers (aged 18-28). In light of the focus on the theme of European Citizenship in 2013, an effort will be made to promote the rights of children in Europe and to highlight the role of youths in promotion of and education of children on these rights. This will be carried out through specific moments cut out within the 2-week programme. Informal education activities throughout the camp will aim to instill a knowledge of rights such as the right to freedom of expression, the right to an education, the right to an adequate standard of living, the right to play and the right to freedom from violence. The young volunteers involved will become more acutely aware of these rights and the children will be invited to explore them through creative activities during camp. Volunteers will receive training on 1. human rights, 2. project management, 3. basic notions of childcare and education, 4. building partnerships and collaborations, 5. basic first aid, 6. working in culturally diverse groups, 7. the value of playPhase 1 - Volunteer recruitment + training: OFD will open volunteering opportunities to overseas youths to involve up to 4 young people from other European countries. The opportunity will be promoted through social networks, informal channels, University DegreePlus and the AIESEC internship programme and feed into the future capacity of OFD becoming a host and sending organisation for EVS.During planning, volunteers will be divided into 3 groups, each with different primary responsibilities. Group A will develop a detailed outline of camp activities and collect or purchase all requirements. Group B will develop volunteer training seminars and team-building activities. Group C will promote the summer camp to local, migrant, expatriate and refugee communities (including contact with schools, cultural centres and refugee accommodation). On agreement, questionnaires will be filled by every parent or guardian, transport arrangements will be made and consent forms will be signed by all guardians (permissions include signatures concerning data protection legislation for OFD to be able to use images of camp activities for purposes such as promotion, annual report and future OFD materials).Phase 2 - Summer camp: The summer camp will take place over 2 weeks, Monday-Friday, between 8am and 3pm. From 8-9.30am every day, volunteers will meet for preparation and reception of children at the different locations. Between 9am and 1pm, the children will attend informal play activities or structured educational and creative activities in an outside public area. Each day, through each event, the children will be taken to a new location and be provided with the opportunity to explore the outside spaces Malta has to offer. The main objective of this activity is to connect children of all ages and backgrounds so as to interact, learn and play together. Volunteers will be divided into pairs and each pair will hold the responsibility of overseeing a particular age group, though all age groups will be encouraged to participate together in informal learning and play. The days will be structured as follows:Please refer to Appendix 1: timetableDay 1 - Ta Qali Adventure Park, Attard: A camp introduction and welcome will be carried out, followed by free play and musical games.Day 2 -Outdoor Creativity Centre, Mgarr: The day will revolve around the creation of healthy treats using local produce, the creation of a collage on children's rights, and an external drama group running a session on self-expression. They will experience taking the ferry to Gozo and visit two cultural sites on the island.Day 10 - morning - Bird Park and Kennedy Grove, Bugibba: The day will commence with a visit to a local bird sanctuary. Following this, the children will be allowed free play in open grove. Later on they will be involved in the creation of musical instruments using recycled items, and the development of a camp song promoting friendship through equality in collaboration with an external musical group. Day 10 - evening - end-of-camp children's party at one of the local open centres for refugees. All stakeholders and new friends invited to attend. Certificates of attendance given to children, camp song shared, activities of camp presented to stakeholders. Each set of activities, except the final day party, will be held in a public area in a different locality in Malta. This gives our annual summer camp a new dimension, whereby children do not only interact, learn and play with the limited number of those registered for summer camp, but are also free to interact with children outside camp who are at the public location on the day. These children will be encouraged to join our activity. Each day will thus give rise to new opportunities to forge new friendships, create awareness about our project and its aims, and foster diversity and social integration on a scale wider than OFD has attempted in the past. In addition, external groups such as a local Capoeira group, a drama troupe and an animation team will be invited to collaborate with OFD in an attempt to introduce children to new opportunities for creativity and self-development. The children will be encouraged to take part in the activities that interest them most and to extend interaction with the groups after camp.Phase 3 - Wrap-up, evaluation and dissemination: Following the closing of the activity, OFD will collect feedback from children, volunteers and any stakeholder that may have interacted in the project. These will be compiled in a report, which will be available for dissemination to uphold the value of transparency transparency and for the sake of knowledge management. In addition to the report, OFD will also create a video of the summer camp for which will be used to showcase the results achieved. OFD will set up an exhibition with the theme friendship in diversity, which will close the camp and start off the dissemination phase of the project. The photographic exhibition will continue to be displayed throughout the forthcoming year to all stakeholders and the general public.
