The most important application source of inspiration for this project of our organization found in Ankara which is a public school that aims to increase social acceptance of individuals with mental disabilities by providing active participation to the social life according to their needs, interests, abilities and qualifications is an EU Lifelong Learning Partnership Grundtvig Programme project named GUIA (Guide Us Into Arts) that we participated as a learning partner and lasted between 2011-2013 years. In this project it was observed by our participating school education staff that how important impacts do visual arts (Drama, theatre, rhythm, dance, etc.) have in the emotional and social development of individuals with disabilities beside increasing their adaptation to the social life. In addition, positive contributions were witnessed by our staff to our students with mental disabilities who participated in project activities abroad. GUIA project was sustained by a national project which is prepared in our school entitled as “Let's Produce Together”. Subsequently two different creative drama educations planned and are provided to get by our volunteer staff in our school. Drama trainings were not limited with the staff and after that a study was initiated with our students from different levels met with the professional drama leaders at certain days and times of the week. These studies have played an important role in observing the results that creative drama can be used as a method in the education of individuals with mental disabilities and also in the strengthening of the idea of this project. The most important aim in resorting to this project is to provide contribution in enhancing our school education staff's professional competence and getting benefit from efficient, practical, goal-oriented, creative, experiantial and active learning methods such as creative drama in the education process of our students with various types and levels of mental disabilities. We believe that this will also enhance the quality of teaching. By this training our school education staff will have the oppurtunity to recognise the difference and the diversity of kinds of trainings offered for the individuals with mental disabilities in an European country. In addition it's aimed to gain personal and professional awareness and self-confidence by sharing school education staff's professional knowledge and experiences abroad as well as interacting with a different language and culture in terms of internationalization. The school education staff contained in the application consists of 25 educators who are graduated from various universities' faculties of education depends on special education, classroom teaching, music, physical education, arts and crafts and psychological counseling and guidence. The activities to be carried in our project is based on specified certain criterias by the sending organization and they are going to be planned and submitted for two weeks by the receiving organization. These are learning activities which are aimed to ensure professional and personal development after having an education in creative drama through the observations and experiences of the participants. The methods that will be utilized during the project executing in order to achieve these objectives are experiential learning, excursion, observation, inspection, data collection, discussion, role-playing, game playing, dramatization, role modeling and modeling. It is believed that this project will provide the school education staff an impact to find an important oppurtunity for the experimentation to learn and integrate new knowledges and skills that they learned into their lesson plans. Another important impact which is expected from creative drama education is increasing the quality and quantity of educations and works carried out with the families of individuals with mental disabilities as well as these individuals. To promote and disseminate the project it is aimed to maintain cooperation with other similar institutions in our region with the help of various studies that contain sample activities developed by the participants and to sustain these kinds of studies from the beginning of the project. Finally, it is expected from this project which is going to be enriched with the support of receiving education and information in both national and international levels to provide substantial benefits in training of qualified special educators who would be capable of using arts methods such as creative training in the process of teaching at a basic level, preparing training plans using new and creative ways and adapting these plans according to the individual requirements. In the long term it is believed that our project is going to serve as an important basis for an Erasmus+KA2 project which is going to be conducted by various strategic partners from Turkey and different countries of Europe.
