Izmir, in the middle of Eastern Mediterranean commercial field as a coastal city, is still a trade city. Some of the world-famous consulting companies have pointed İzmir as the city having the 117th largest economy of the world and China has chosen İzmir as one of the 70 most convenient cities for investment. Aegean Free Zone, in Izmir, has been pointed as one of the 40 most promising industrial centres for investment.
Port of Izmir – Alsancak is the most strategic port of Turkey in terms of location, quality and potential. With its capacity over 12 million tons, Port of İzmir is Turkey’s biggest and most important container exportation port, serving all of Central and Western Anatolia through railways and roads. It deals out solid and liquid bulk, containerized cargo, general cargo, bulk freight, Ro – Ro and passenger transportation. Because of the increased demands of the city and the logistics sector, Port of Candarlı which has an annualized capacity of 4 million ships is being established. Port of Candarlı will be the 10th largest port of the world. The other part of the project to render Izmir as a logistics base is Kemalpasa Logistics centre with its storage capacity of 14.811 containers.
Izmir is an 8500-year-old city of port and the owner of international-capital-companies over 12.000 and 5 ports. The source of such a qualified stuff in logistics sector is our Department of Transportation which is the first in Izmir in vocational training at businesses. Our school produced its first graduates and brought them in to the sector. However, the school's being quite new and its lacking workshop areas confines the students to only their internship businesses. As the background of logistics education and the system of maintaining knowledge in Europe is more deep-rooted, we are willing to realize this project. Thus the students will leave their disadvantages behind them. Before we start our project, 9 of our students and 1 of our teachers received certificates of participation from Dokuz Eylul University Department of European Union Studies – Graduate School of Social Sciences under their project “Jean Monnet – Learning at School / EU for Me” .
Our aim is to convert the theoretical knowledge of the students into practice, to establish priority for our students in profession by donating them with the logistics applications in Europe – Europass completion certificates in return and to make them know foreign cultures and languages. Internship abroad contributes personal development more than domestic internship. So, the participants of our project will be perceived more qualified and experienced by employers. Besides, we believe that our students will be more motivated on their school subjects to take part in this project.
During our contact meetings with some international logistics companies of Izmir and also our shareholders, Arkas Holding Company, MSC Holding Company, Horoz Logistics, OMSAN Logistics, Gunaydin Logistics and Chamber of Customs Brokers, we were declared that they demand for qualified labour force who is sufficient in foreign languages, has enough knowledge and experience on international logistics and the logistics applications in Europe, can be employed at their overseas branch offices and that the candidates will be acknowledged as preferential if documented.
Transport Services who has professional training in business expects to train personnel with experience in the profession abroad. Mobility operates in 2 groups of 10 students were carried out between the Netherlands and Spain between 1 June 2015 and 31 May 2016.
