PROJECT
FINISHED
NUCLIO is a nonprofit organization established in 2001 by professional and amateur astronomers. Presently it involves researchers, teachers and other professionals in order to promote and improve the teaching of science , with an emphasis on astronomy and astrophysics. NUCLIO intends to be a reference in Portugal and at an international level in science communication and science education activities. NUCLIO has national, European and international partners in different educational levels and areas of expertise.
With this project, that mobilizes its members to participate in different training courses, NUCLIO is envisioning the following objectives: to improve the skills of professionals from this institution in order to promote better training and support to all educators that take part in our training and/or demonstration activities. The vision is to improve our members skills on the use of IBSE (Inquiry Based Science Education ) learning methodology, in particular for the teaching of disciplines related to STEM ( Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics); to increase the quality of our teacher training and the offer to teachers of various schools that NUCLIO offers assistance; to suppress educational and/or training gaps; to know the reality of inclusive education, including educational pedagogy in science, and to develop contacts for further partnerships at European level; to improve the scientific and didactic skills; to know national educational curricula in foreign countries; to improve their language and the use of ICT ( Information and Communication ) skills. We hope that the training events suggested in this application the necessary skills will be acquired in order to provide support to the existing educational needs in Portugal, namely in what concerns student centered models, on the use of modern tools and resources and whenever possible in contextualized ways. NUCLIO is also very interested in the design of specific efforts embracing students with special needs.
The NUCLIO intends to mobilize members for the following courses:
- Summer School ODS and ISE, in July 2014 (A1) , where several training events will take place in parallel, and our collaborators will participate in specific actions, in accordance with their skills and needs, always envisioning the aims of our institution and posterior implementation. NUCLIO is interested in events that foster the use of modern tools for teaching/learning, innovative resources and sharing of best practices. The creation of on line communities, the use of open education resources and e-learning are also strategic areas that we wish to develop further.
- ESA GTTP Training Session, in November / December 2014 (A2), were participants will have the opportunity to contact with scientists in charge of education and outreach efforts of different science missions. NUCLIO trainers and trainees will have the opportunity to establish important collaborations with ESA (European Space Agency) science directorate and to integrate the proposed innovations in the framework of science curricula in Portugal.
- Astronomy with Hands-On, in April 2015 (A3) , where participants will have the opportunity to work with astronomy databases and remote labs. The training will be promoted by experient scientists developing a very important work in the field of experimental sciences. In this particular case for the development of science research, using real data, in classroom.
- NUCLIO intends to establish a pilot project with a Spanish University in order to promote experience exchange between portuguese and spanish teachers and future joing collaboration between schools from the 2 countries.
Overall NUCLIO foresee that the selected collaborators will bring back to Portugal not only the good models for science teaching but also tools that allows teachers to stimulate students to pursue a science career, that enhances science literacy and that promotes collaboration between countries. This collaboration can be achieved by experiences and resources shared between teachers, at a national and international level, by the promotion of joint activities between students from several countries and the strengthen of a pan European network of educators .
This vision is part of the activities already developed by NUCLIO in the last years and this proposal will allow the enrichment and strengthening of the innovative offers to educators that are already a tradition in our institution.
