The ports of Stockholm, Tallinn, Helsinki, Naantali and Turku play key roles in accessibility of Central Baltic Region both in cargo traffic and passenger traffic. Effective, competitive, eco-friendly and safe port procedures and sea transportation solutions between the five cities have major importance on trades between the port regions, between the three countries and also in wider international scale. Specifically, connections between these ports serve as main gateways in international trade between the three countries. Sea routes between the five cities play also a major role in mobility of individuals as well as tourism. For the interconnectivity, growth and sustainability of the port regions and countries ports play critically important role. Penta project will develop strategic views on how the ports and the sea connections between them will be affected by the expected development and changes in the economies, industries and trade considering both implications to cargo and passenger traffic. Project sets visions and proactive measures on how the ports can be better adjust themselves to expected developments and prepare cross-boarder measures jointly to ensure smooth, efficient, sustainable and safe handling of cargoes and passengers. The project also sets new grounds for multi-port co-operation as co-operative measures so far have been mostly bilateral. The project consists of four Work Packages: WP1 Project management and coordination WP2 Cargo and passenger flows development scenarios WP3 Environmental actions WP4 Safety, security and administrative procedures The work packages run parallel and in interaction to ensure systematic and coherent approach and the outputs. The partners of the project participate in all work packages. Each of the work packages first analyse the current situation on the theme, secondly identifies main future challenges and, thirdly, develops and suggest proactive measures for the port group. The essential element in the process is the systematic workshop activities where the future directions concerning the common proactive cooperation are elaborated with the ports as well as other key stakeholders. Achievements: The PENTA project explored the alternatives of how the five Central Baltic ports can together face and better comprehend the challenges of today and the future. By developing cargo and passenger flows development scenarios, the partners have been able to create a shared vision about the likely development of cargo and passenger transportation. The project also identified ongoing and forthcoming legislative measures as well as trends set to affect port procedures and the regulative framework. Finally, the ports exchanged information on current port practices and created harmonious future practices specifically related to safety and security procedures, environmental practices and management, and other administrative procedures in ports.
