NOVEL NUMERICAL ALGORITHMS FOR PLASMONIC STRUCTURES EMBEDDED IN A LAYERED MEDIUM (LMplasmonics)
Start date: Nov 1, 2009, End date: Oct 31, 2013 PROJECT  FINISHED

This proposal is submitted to support Dr. Ergun Simsek's reintegration as a full-time faculty member at Bahcesehir University, Istanbul, Turkey. Dr. Simsek joined Bahcesehir University in September 2008, after receiving his Ph.D. at Duke University, USA in 2006 and 20 months of working experience at the post-doctoral level at Schlumberger-Doll Research and Harvard University, USA. His current and past studies are engaged with theoretical, computational, and experimental research at the broad interface between electromagnetics and optics. The research effort outlined in this proposal is a four-year career development plan for Dr. Simsek, and it focuses on novel numerical algorithms for plasmonic structures embedded in a multilayered media. It can be briefly said that the central goal of the proposed research is to provide the optics and nanotechnology communities new electromagnetic modeling capabilities, which will enable much faster and more complete analyses, designs, and optimizations of realistic plasmonic structures and optical antennas. Dr. Simsek’s expertise and vision on these topics will contribute to European competitiveness in standard development, and to the transfer of the knowledge he acquired in the USA. Prof. Qing H. Liu (Duke University) and Prof. Ken Crozier (Harvard University) will provide theoretical and experimental support, relatively, throughout the whole project. Bahcesehir University fully supports this project, and is ready to do its part for Dr. Simsek’s successful reintegration. However, for ultimate success, the support through this grant is extremely crucial.
