Not a stranger- Lessons on active citizenship and participation
Start date: Feb 2, 2012,

The EVS project takes place in Narva, in different venues around the town within 12 months and involves 2 partners (Estonia, England ). There will be 2 volunteers involved in the EVS service. As Narva is linguistically and culturally isolated region in North-Eastern Estonia, affected by the high rates of unemployment and social stagnation it lacks in opportunities for young people to acquire new skills or to experience initiatives available to their peers from other parts of Estonia and the rest of Europe. The project seeks to create conditions for informal education for the local youngsters, which would make them familiar with the relationship between society, labour and active citizenship. The project not only gives an opportunity for an open discussions and practical opportunities for experiencing unpaid work experience. Preliminary outreach of the project is to be local and limited to one town but through the promotion of the project in the main nearby towns such as Sillamäe and Narva – Joesuu it will have a wider impact. Main themes of the project are- European awareness and minorities. Indeed, Ida-Viru, being a peripheral region of Estonia and of the EU, tends to be linguistically and culturally segregated. Furthermore, the weak economic situation of the region does not allow many chances for personal development. The project will bring international aspect to Ida-Viru county through EVS programme in order to raise awareness and understanding about Europe, European citizenship and multiculture and the posibilities it gives people, especially among youngsters. The implemented activities are strongly connected with goals achievement, which are: contribution to Language Network, supporting VitaTiim Resource Centre daily activities, working with local youth on the topic of international youth exchanges and collecting, updating and sharing information on living, working and studying in Europe and, for sure, introducing volunteer’s country and culture to locals. The main methods that will be used in order to implement ativities are non-formal education with some elements of formal one.
