For many years some of the vocational students at Verdal Senior Secondary School have been part of their training outside of Norway. This is laid down in the school’s core values and we want to be seen as a school associated with internationalization. 28 students from second year studies in construction, child and youth work and health care will have the opportunity to participate in this project. The project’s main goal is for the participants to increase their trade skills and personal development while studying abroad in a company or institution where they practice their chosen vocational training for two weeks. Social and cultural activities in the evenings and weekends in collaboration with local youth strengthen this development. The stay in a foreign country is part of a subject called “Deepening Project” for which the students select learning goals from the third year curriculum and which then become the basis of the practical work that the students work on during their placement weeks. These weeks in a foreign country are part of the assessment for the whole subject. Trade, linguistic, cultural and social skills development is central to the project. The participants will be able to acquire this expertise both through the planning and preparation leading up to the stay as well as during the implementation of the two-week stay in a foreign country. Tests and clarification of expectations before the stay, as well as tests and evaluation after the stay, will give us answers about the extent to which the participants have achieved personal and trade skills development and have benefited from the project. By participating in this project, the students receive experiences that make it easier for them to participate in other and more comprehensive internationalization projects in the future, either in their education or their careers. With the current development in the workplace, with increasingly multilingual and multicultural staff, we believe that such projects are of importance in establishing good working environments in an inclusive community for many years to come.
