No Man Is an Island

"No Man Is an Island" was Erasmus+ Programme KA1 project for youth organisations from five EU countries: Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Portugal and Spain. It was organised by Mittetulundusühing MITRA. The main aim of the project was to go deeper in European Citizenship education with focus on inclusion of youth with fewer opportunities and particularly from islands where they face natural geographical exclusion. The training course was organised on Saaremaa island in Estonia in September 5-14,2015 with follow-up activities after it. The working language was English. The main objective was that by the end of the project participants gain experience to work with European Citizenship and European values tools and particularly with the focus on cultural and social dimensions and integrate the learning outcomes into their daily work. Youth workers have got competences and practical experience in order to promote European Citizenship education and act effectively as multipliers of newly acquired competences. One of the main objectives was that participants of the training course have created a network for learning and sharing ideas and creating new Erasmus+ projects. Youth workers increased participation in public life and integration into society of young people with fewer opportunities by promoting the non-formal education and building the capacity and quality work in youth organisations. The specific objectives of the project were: 1. To increase participants’ awareness of social rights, exclusion issues and social inclusion in the framework of youth living in disadvantaged contexts. 2. To understand the role of young people in their local realities in the context of the social rights and inclusion. 3. To exchange best practices about diverse inclusion strategies that can be later transferred to various contexts. 4. To learn how to assess competences with young people. 5. To become familiar with recognition tools, methods and approaches. 6. To exchange good practices about how these practices can influence the pathways of inclusion of target groups with the focus on employability. Project activities included training course in Estonia, dissemination and follow-up activities. During the training course there were names and ice-breaking games, team building activities, presentations of partners organisations and sharing of best practices in social and cultural inclusion, research work on youth with fewer opportunities and migrant's needs, European Citizenship education for inclusion, entrepreneurship methods as a methods for inclusion, forum theater for social and cultural inclusion, meetings with local youth on Saaremaa island, discussions about their needs, brainstorms and work on new methods for social and cultural inclusion, creation of new activities for inclusion and youth projects for Erasmus+ Programme, creation of the dissemination plan to share project results in youth organisations and partners' countries, plans for follow-up activities, work on YouthPasses, evaluation of the training course and attractive wishes to participants. There were also energizers, reflections in peers and groups, intercultural evenings, video sharing about project activities. The working methods of the project were based on the non-formal education practices in Europe, learning by doing activities and educational and artistic development workshops. Few innovative methods from participants involved in this project were also used. The impact of this project on participants is visible in the competences they have gained and developed during the project. Participants trained skills in order to use them in daily work. They have promoted knowledge and results of this project in youth work, media, daily life and effectively act as multipliers of newly acquired competences in youth organisations and local communities. As a result, this project improved practical experience of youth workers, ensuring the use of the European values, social inclusion methods and promoting them in daily life and youth work, brought new inputs and perspectives for project planning and implementation. Youth workers gained an attitude to cooperate with peers and articulate the interests of their organisation at local, European and international levels. This project has inspired the creation of basic network for learning and sharing ideas face-to-face and virtually by emails and in social media. After the project partner organisations applied for new projects under Erasmus+ Programme and these projects will provide benefits to its stakeholders and participants and increase future cooperation between project partners. MITRA team used this project to get own NGO better known, to build the reputation and recognition. MITRA members built youth organisations' network, to improve project management skills and to continue the development and improvement of the materials and methodology in European Citizenship education and inclusion.
