Start date: Jun 15, 2015, End date: Dec 14, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The organization of a serie of 4 debates (4 regions) between youth councils of child welfare institutions and policymakers. The young people participating in the debate are young people who are members of a youth council in a child welfare institution. In total, approximately 25 youth councils and thus over 150 young people will participate in the debates. These 150 young people represent a much larger group of young people in care since they are (like a youth council member) representing all the other young people from their own institution. Things that they get together will benefit all young people in child welfare. The young people who join the project will follow a training "debating skills" (provided by young professionals from NJR) before the great debate. During this training the youth will learn in a "playful" and interactive way what a debate is and how they can present their views convincingly. All youth councils will invite at least one board- or management member + one companion (specialist) of their own organization. Besides that policy makers from the municipal and provincial politics will be invited. Led by an experienced debate leader the young people will debate with the policy makers on the basis of by the youngsters (preparatory phase) devised topics. The project will run in 4 regions seperately. The coming out of the 4 regions will be collected all together in the final publications (video, poster, press report). The 3 phases of the project are: 1) Preparation and selection of topics 2) Four regional trainings + debates (the main events of the project) 3) National Evaluation and lobby (sharing experiences, the spreading of the publications, follow-up etc). Main goals of the whole project are: -Suppporting and empowering young people to participate in their institution and society. -Giving young people out of child welfare the chance to exchange with and inspire policy makers. -Showing policy makers the benefit of communicating with young people with care experiences. The four debates will be recorded on video. The video compilation will be spread and youngsters can use it to "force" policy makers to follow up the commitments they made during the debate. It will also be spread within the participating institutions so that social workers can be inspired. In addition the video will also be used for lobbying activities nationwide. Besides the video a poster and press report will be produced and spread as a result of the project.
