New Spatial Development Zone for Border Regions of Latvia and Russia – Connecting Potentials of Two Countries

The Eastern and North-Eastern part of Latvia(Latgale Region and part of VidzemeRegion) and the Western part of Russia(Pskov Oblast and Leningrad Oblast) is seenas a favourable region for transit traffic butit lacks economic integration and dynamicsdue to low?quality transport links, dominanceof traditional economic structures andpoor quality of physical infrastructure (roadsurface, services).The main objective of the project is topromote sustainable spatial developmentin the entire project area by creating newcommon spatial development zone andintroducing new ideas for development ofremote regions on both sides of the BalticSea Region and the EU external border.The main results of the project are: acommon Spatial Development Strategy forall project partners, a large scale study onregional potential, a study tour to Finland-Russia border area, a study on selection andestablishment of technological parks andlogistic centres in Latgale Region, LeningradOblast and Pskov Oblast.
