New Spanish Curriculum
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The changes made to our curriculum mean that expectations for Spanish teaching have increased. We want to move away from our current style of teaching, which involves staff with low confidence being entirely reliant on a rather uninspiring scheme of work. We want to develop our own scheme of work that is more in keeping with the teaching style and overall ethos of our school and responds better to the needs of individuals. We want to equip our MFL coordinator and another member of staff with the skills to support all of the staff in the delivery of this. We want to greatly enhance participants’ language skills, cultural knowledge and understanding of teaching methodology and create a positive attitude towards languages across staff and pupils and to also involve parents and the community in this. We want to reinvigorate the school link started some years ago by a member of our staff. We want our pupils to have regular exposure to native speakers of Spanish and to have the chance to get to know these pupils personally through regular linking activities. This will help to promote enjoyment of language learning. We want to develop a source of expertise and support through training two key members of staff so that they can help and inspire others within our school and also contribute to networks in our local area and focus on using language learning to boost our EAL pupils’ literacy skills leading to improvements in their attainment across the curriculum. We want to improve our language teaching provision in early years and KS1 in order to give our pupils are very positive start with languages and equip our staff with the skills and confidence to run clubs and activities involving pupils and parents. These courses include intensive language learning, language teaching methodology, intercultural understanding and visit in a Spanish school. Our children will then have other children of their own age to communicate with so that they can really explore the Spanish culture, allowing them to develop their awareness of life beyond their immediate social environment and increase their ambitions and aspirations in the long term. This intensive immersion experience will give the two key staff members the necessary boost in confidence and the intensity of the training will allow them to make significant amount of progress in a short time.On return from the courses, the two participants will share what they have learned with the rest of the staff through staff meetings. Our EAL pupils will greatly benefit from more appropriate activities and resources. The scheme of work that will be produced will support progression and include activities that will be appropriate to our learners and will motivate staff and pupils. This there will also be appropriate materials produced to support language learning at KS1.The skills developed by the MFL coordinator will allow her to support and inspire others. All of our staff will have much more confidence in their ability to teach Spanish. They will develop more enthusiasm and a love of Spain and Spanish language and culture which will be passed on to our pupils leading to more enjoyable lessons and better learning. We believe that our staff will begin to see themselves as language learners and will be keen to continue their own development of the language after the project is ended. Their professional profile will be strengthened meaning that they will be more employable in the future and the benefit of the boost in confidence they will gain will support their teaching across the whole curriculum, not only within Spanish. Literacy will improve and culture will be incorporated into daily life and routines. We will have more international activities and events leading to greater involvement of parents and the local community in our school life. These activities will help us to continue to promote our school ethos of diversity and acceptance. We will share outcomes with other schools in our area through MFL networks. This will mean that the impact can be multiplied beyond our school. We will also support others in future applications for Erasmus + funding.
