New European Transport Technologies

The project aims to improve access to skills and qualifications in the European transport sector. It has two distinct training components aimed at two target groups, namely, drivers and trainers in the road haulage and distribution industry and fork lift truck operators and supervisors. The first training component focuses upon training in the use of digital tachographs. Having explored current training materials and competencies in the use of tachographs, the project aims to develop a European standard of competence in use of digital tachographs that can be developed into a model for European-wide certification. This element will be accompanied by a trainers' training pack on use of new tachograph technology, which will include a CD-Rom, a paper manual, and a series of PowerPoint presentations. The developed trainer pack will be piloted with 50 trainers across the partner countries. The second component will identify educational and safety materials that are currently available to fork lift truck operators and, having done so, will develop and pilot improved ICT materials for operators and supervisors. A core element of this component is the development of a hazard perception programme to enable hazards and risks to be perceived and, therefore, prevented before they occur. The dissemination strategy is one of the key elements of the project with a dissemination focus group being established to oversee the project's four-phase strategy involving: creating knowledge of the project; creating knowledge of project progress; embedding the product in the marketplace and post project dissemination.
