Welding technology is applied to the most important industrial sectors worldwide; Metallurgical, electronic, automobile industry and civil engineering are examples of economic areas where well qualified welding professionals are fundamental for the quality of the final result. However, despite its applicability, the renewal of specialized welding professionals does not follow the needs of market. (Full-time equivalents in joining technology – Important results: in Europe, there are around 1,9 million full-time-equivalent joining specialists. “The Economic Importance of Welding and Joining in Europe”, Dr.-Ing. Klaus Middeldorf, German Welding Society). By one side, experienced welders are getting old and according to the natural cycle of life, are retiring. On the other side, the entrance in the labour market of new welding professionals does not answer its actual needs. In order to maintain the quality level and to prevent future problems of performance it is fundamental to invest in people’s training and qualification. The project aimed at improving the performance of new students in the welding area, by developing a multimedia dictionary with welding imperfections terms and definitions, as well as pictures, making welding education with a new innovative tool in a subject that is lacking in welding education - welding imperfections.Focusing in a previous LDV project,Weldiction, the objective was to gather the methodologies used in the Weldiction Project (this project gathered general terms in welding to be used in a multimedia dictionary: welding processes, materials, welding positions, etc) and take it a step further by introducing a new dictionary containing examples of welding imperfections and their descriptions (as in the standard EN ISO 6520-1 and EN ISO 6520-2), giving to the students a new tool that will be essential to their training. The previous experience in Weldiction assured a successful development of this new tool. The project consortium gathered various representatives of welding institutes and education institutes with sound expertise in education and training in joining technologies, ideally suited to effectively ensure a high impact of the project results and their use beyond the projects' funding period.
