Multilingualism in Europe as a Resource for Immigration - Dialogue Initiative among the Universities of the Mediterranean
The increasing movement of people in Europe implies proper strategies aimed atcultural and social inclusion in receptor countries, in particular an efficient system oflinguistic integration. The mediterranean region is an ideal laboratory to promote a pluraland inclusive multilingualism, also functional to occupational needs in a moderneconomy.MERIDIUM aims to support in the region the goals of EU multilingualism policies bymeans of a permanent Study and Documentation Centre on Multilingualism inMediterranean Europe.The preliminary and qualifying action of the network will be a study which includes anintegrated evaluation and the specification of the indicators in primary and adulteducation, through:(I) in receptor countries: (a) a national research based on a census of dislocation andfeatures of ethnic minorities; (b) some local context-surveys and (c) questionnairesin primary schools and among adults to detect awareness of multilingualism andtendency to consider it as a resource.(II) in the exporter country: (aa) identification of policies of linguistic learning andmaintaining of the language of origin in immigration Countries; (bb) surveys andquestionnaires to detect, both in adults and children, awareness of benefit ofmultilingual competences and tendency to consider it as a resource.The outcome of the project will be:1) a university network for promotion of multilingualism;2) a Study and Documentation Centre on Multilingualism in MediterraneanEurope;3) an on-line data base;4) a periodical newsletter;5) national/local seminars;6) publication of CD-Rom and booklets for adults and children;7) proceedings of the final international conference.Results will be produced in the six linguistic versions of the partners and addressed to:scientific community; policy-makers at different levels; public authorities; Chambers ofCommerce; enterprises; NGOs; groups of immigrates and civil society.
