Multifunctional Intensive Land Use in Europe (MILUNET)
Start date: Dec 31, 2003, End date: Dec 30, 2007 PROJECT  FINISHED

The overall objective of MILUnet is to create an effective partnership network, aiming to promote Multifunctional Intensive Land Use as a means to achieve more sustainable (urban) development in the EU. By utilising expertise and know-how on MILU, regional and local governments have the possibility to increase the effectiveness of both urban policy implementation and planning towards sustainability for the economic, social and environmental benefits of regional development. Achievements: Achievements so far MILUnet is a network dedicated to the generation, collection, exchange and transfer of knowledge on the subject of Multifunctional and Intensive Land Use (MILU) as a means to realise more sustainable (urban) development in Europe. MILUnet core activities centred around bi-annual regional workshops. The interactive workshop method includes an Implementation Lab (IL). An IL focuses on case areas in the region where the workshop is held. This method has been used during all MILUnet workshops, a total of 7 workshops have been organised. During the operation the workshop format has been improved according to suggestions from partners and other participants, thanks to the detailed evaluation format produced during the project. Each workshop dealt with two case studies; one on a regional and one on a local scale. Preferably the workshop should be joined by a group of local stakeholders and planners. Outcomes are presented to a group of stakeholders and published in a local magazine. Core of the workshops is the focus on six considerations: Identity, Critical Mass, Connections, Human Scale, Promotion&Marketing and Process. Participants study a case study dossier (prepared by the host partner) in advance and provide relevant reference cases. In all host cities (Stockholm (SE), Mantova (IT), Huelva (ES), Munich (DE), Charleroi (BE) and Patras (GR)) and The Hague (launch meeting) an impulse was given to the process of regeneration in the area. In the Hague a pilot project has been set up to implement housing in the case area. In Stockholm the results will be used in the Kista Science City masterplan. In Mantova a cooperation of municipalities started to work on the MILU case areas based on the workshops results. In Huelva the establishment of cooperation between several parties came closer by identifying common interests. In Munich a regional cooperation is started up to work on the regional case study. In Charleroi the opportunities of all scattered plans came together:a start up has been made already to a comprehensive plan for the region. In Patras the host partner uses the outcomes to further develop the economic strategy for the region. In June 2006 the MILUnet Summer Studio for young professionals (organised in the Dutch Zeeland Province) was a big succes, the participants brought up innovative ideas for Zeeland's spatial problems. in May 2007 the Closing Event (final conference) in Lisbon was organised around 11 study cases. In both events the method and content of MILUnet have been spread. A DVD with films for dissemination is available. On the MILUnet website people can find the results and information about the network and it's activities and a growing database of reference cases: www.milu.net.
