On March 12th, 2012 during official parliamentary session, the President of EU Parliament, Mr. M. Schulz, officially announced that the Written Declaration 50/2011 about “Chess in School” was endorsed by the EU Parliament. The Declaration calls on the Commission and Council: - To encourage the introduction of the program “Chess in School” in the educational system of the Member States; - To pay, in its forthcoming communication on sport, the necessary attention to the program “Chess in School” and to ensure sufficient funding for it from 2012 onwards; - To take into consideration the results of any studies on the effects of this program on children’s development. According to above statements we decided to take care for the gap between current national educational curricula which are encyclopaedically and test-oriented and demands recognized by developmental psychology. Our project meets the challenge. The chess game, which is canvas of the project, can be considered as a field of sport, science, and art. This game can serve many developmental, educational and recreational functions in the lives of young people, as well as may support advanced decision-making processes in the most important social spheres (Polgar, S., Goldstein, D.: Rich As A King: How the Wisdom of Chess Can Make You a Grandmaster of Investing. New York 2014; Przewoźnik, J.: The Psychology of chess and its untapped potential. Reports Section of Psychology, No. 9, Lublin, 1987). The importance of this game for the development of thinking in business, education as the basis of a strategic approach must also be emphasized (Graber, R.: Business lessons from chess: a discussion of parallels between chess strategy and business strategy... Academy of Educational Leadership Journal, V. 13, No 1, 2009). Importance, and positive effects of playing chess are unarguable, however it is very important to encourage young people to playing chess. That is why it is important to create a tool, which can help young people to see advantages of playing chess, but also show them that playing chess can be fun! Computer software supporting learning chess is a good solution. Especially that in modern world young people function mostly in digital environment, and language of modern technologies is understandable for them. Indicated problems occur in many European countries, so solutions to them should be prepared internationally, so that to compare experiences and find best possible solutions. International composition of the project team ensures that developed tool will be ready to be used in many different environments.Under the MATE project it is planned to develop software, which contain 3 modules: module with tests assessing chess skills, module testing cognitive competencies, module with training chess and cognitive skills. Software will also contain automatic assessment of pupil’s level of competency and classification to future trainings groups, according to test results. After completion of tests, software will give automatic assessment of results of tests and suggest best training path for given person. This will ensure that such method of learning will be effective, as each pupil will have chance to develop his/her skills in their own rhythm. For teachers and trainers, who would wish to use prepared software – manual will be prepared. Both software and manual will be available in English, Polish, Spanish, Italian, and Lithuanian.Also report summarizing all project activities will be prepared, so that to illustrate the process of development of tools.
