Move it! Intercultural learning through sport
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The exchange is meant to take place in Hungary, bringing together young people from Bulgaria, Spain and Hungary, most of whom are coming from disadvantaged backgrounds (social, ethnical, regional and economical). The groups will consist of 6 participants each, accompanied by a trained group leaders from each organisation. The main objective of the exchange is to provide a learning opportunity for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The participants of this exchange have in general limited possibilities to benefit from the opportunities offered by the European Union, taking an active role in creating, implementing and evaluating international projects, improving important skills that could later help them enter the labour market, and meeting people from other cultures. As an important part of this project, young people have been involved from the very beginning and are encouraged and supported in taking responsibilities, unleashing their talents and gaining self-confidence.The exchange also provides an opportunity for 3 groups of young people coming from far-away parts of Europe to experience living in an intercultural environment, working and playing in teams, overcoming prejudices and getting a deeper understanding of their own cultures and identities; besides and practising foreign languages in a secure, well-organised and coordinated way with professional team of leaders supporting team.Sports and intercultural outdoor activities are the main chosen topics, since there are great tools and methodologies developed in this field to using non-verbal communication and give an excellent ground for working in teams and building strong interpersonal connections. In social and youth work, physical activities are used to handle behaviour problems and most of the participants will have previous experience in doing several kinds of sports. These activities can be partly prepared and facilitated by the participants, helping them improve leadership skills and increase their self-esteem. Through playing and cooperating in sport activities participants can share and see each other’s customs and cultures. Taking into account the possibility of having a generally low level of spoken foreign languages in the group, through sports and intercultural outdoor activities participants will be able to connect with each other, experience team work, formation and cooperation in a community, practise patience, persistence and tolerance. Moreover, through this exchange we will raise awareness of and promote a healthier lifestyle.Other objectives of the project are to help to create new international connections amongst the young participants, to foster intercultural learning and understanding, discover each other’s cultures, learn new ways of spending leisure time in useful and constructive ways, play and develop new games and activities that they will share and implement in their local communities. Besides, participants will improve their social, communication, and language skills, that will be a crucial help for them in the future when trying to overcome their disadvantages.Through the exchange the coordinators would like to promote European programs like Erasmus+, international voluntary initiatives, to share information and good practises about youth mobility programs and possibilities - and therefore set an example that will inspire other childcare organisations and groups of young people to take initiative and start or join similar projects.
