motion of cross-border entrepreneurship in sectors of agriculture & food-beverages by empowering laboratories’ accreditation systems & certification of products and services (Building Excellence through Accreditation)

Informed consumers in Europe and other parts of the world urge their regulatory authorities to set even more stringent health-related standards for food and agricultural products. In order to be more successful on national & international markets, Greece’s and Albania’s agricultural producers and firms involved in the food & beverages industry need improved access to reliable and recognised testing and certification services offered by efficient and market-oriented analytical laboratories as well as inspection and certification bodies. For this reason, the project will pilot implement ISO 22000:2005 food safety management systems in selected (through an open call) businesses in the food chain. However, certification of businesses “passes” through accreditation of certification & inspection bodies and testing laboratories. ISO 17025 is the standard that specifies the general requirements for the competence of laboratories to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling. Thus, the project also foresees pilot application of this standard. The project addresses both the export promotion issues and the consumer related aspects. SMEs in the respective sectors, producers and consumers are among those expected to benefit from the project.
