During the last century and over decades Central Europe was divided by an insuperable border called the Iron Curtain. Especially the eastern side of the former border was extremely sparsely populated and the border zone itself was left completely unsettled. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain in the late 1980s and the reunion of Eastern and Western Europe this former border area now runs like a Green Belt of valuable landscapes and ecosystems throughout Europe, comprising of protected and non-protected areas, covering over more than 12500 km and bordering seven Central Europe Member States. Therefore this Green Belt area offers the opportunity to create and conserve not only a unique ecological refuge but also to develop these peripheral rural areas in the heart of Europe in a sustainable and integrated way.Greennet will contribute to this goal, not only by the protection of endangered species in certain areas but mainly by the promotion of an interconnected and barrier free ecological corridor, especially in the areas of outmost ecological importance (National Parks etc.). The project aims however not to neglect the large intermediate areas which don’t have any particular protection status as these areas of non- or low protection status also need to be included in the network ensuring their important function as stepping stones between valuable habitats. The project has envisioned not only to connect nature but also to bring people together by connecting cultural heritage with natural one at the same time. Achievements: Since project start in April 2011 GREENNET already achieved outstanding results. Not only promotion of the Central European Green Belt was in the focus of project implementation but also intensive work in pilot regions in order to contribute to the achievement of project objectives. Main outputs for the project have been finalized such as the transnational methodology and transnational analysis. The transnational GIS-tool which is in the final stage of elaboration a beta version is already available on www.greennet-online.eu. to be used for internal and external project actors. The web based tool serves to visualize and identify spatial conflicts in the pilot areas of the project and will function as a decision support tool in order to decide where concrete action will be conducted during project implementation. Hence, with the GIS – tool spatial data will be analyzed in order to identify those core-areas with spatial conflicts where solution strategies within and after the GREENNET project will be applied. In addition the project consortium identified possible solutions and instruments to solve spatial conflicts identified in the pilot regions concerned. Those instruments for the needs and conditions are tailored for those specific and unique problems in the pilot regions. BOKU Vienna carries out a constant monitoring on the application of these instruments and the results reached and will sum up all regional activities. To reach international publicity the project organized several public events. Main lobbying event since the project start was the organization of lunch debate in Brussels, Belgium for members of EU commission and members of the European Parliament on 19 October 2011. The activities turned out to be successful as the European Green Belt was included into the Green Infrastructure Strategy, officially announced in spring 2013. In addition all project partners organized public events for the local population and stakeholders such as a guided excursions in different pilot regions and a “school of landscape awareness”. Activities have been completed by several public lectures for local stakeholders and the general public on the unique ecolotical and cultural value of the Central European Green Belt.
