Context:Chemical pollution and the deterioration of biodiversity are now universally recognized among the main causes of deterioration of the quality of the marine environment and its biodiversity, thus representing the major indexes to be evaluated under the monitoring of the marine environment. Moreover, the Mediterranean is going increasingly facing a rapid change of biodiversity is due to the penetration and expansion of non-native species is due to climatic change that because of reduced competition of native species indigenous stressed by environmental changes and dall'overfishing . Through the assessment of the levels of these two different forms of environmental deterioration, the draft accepts the need for protection of natural areas protected. Aims: The monitoring system will through the achievement of the following specific objectives: Evaluation of levels of chemical contamination on water and sediment and biological pollution; Definition of guidelines for sustainable management of marine resources of Maltese sites of special interest environmental and landscape, in order to encourage eco-tourism; Development of a common information system easy consultation aimed at sharing and dissemination of the results online through GIS.
