Our Erasmus-group and the management of the school together have set the goals and areas where we have to ensure professional development. These areas are: the teaching of English as a foreign language, the instruction of subjects in English in the bilingual program and the use of ICT tools in the teaching process. The teaching of English is the most important priority of our school. This is the basis of the bilingual programme, where science subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Geography – are also taught in English, so the school puts special emphasis on the further training of these teachers. The subject Civilisation of the English-speaking countries aims to get the students acquainted with the culture of these countries. Our school attaches special importance to giving the chance to its teachers to instruct themselves in an English-speaking country in order to become highly qualified, near-native speakers of English. The aim of our project is to encourage more and more teachers to participate in international projects; to set a good example to their colleagues with their enthusiasm; to develop the quality of teaching by sharing their experiences – as the title of the project suggests – we would like to have a modern school with modern methodology to be able to keep up with the ever-changing needs of our students. Expanding our international connections is also significant as we would like to offer valuable programs to our students so that they could continue their studies at universities after having acquiried the necessary competences.We are planning the participation of 7 colleagues in 5 methodology and 2 English language courses. Having defined the school’s needs and aims we contacted the organising institutions. After pre-registration and learning about the detailed program of the courses, we chose the most suitable ones to our development plans. All the 7 courses take place in the summer of 2016 so that they would not interfere with our teachers’ work during the school year. Cork English World in Ireland organises a course that deals with methodology through culture. A Mathematics-English teacher is going to take part in this course, which offers a task-based, practical approach to language teaching thus ensuring professional practice. Our second course will be organised in Worthing by CES Dublin also in July 11-22. Different approaches of EFL methodology will be revised. Motivating activities, drama and role play, vocabulary games and creative writing methods will make her academic work even more effective. A German-English teacher needs a refreshment course after coming back to work from maternity leave. York Associates in England offers a methodology in practice course which provides motivating ideas.We are planning the participation of four teachers between 11-22 August 2016. Entitled Modern British Culture by Excel English London aims to develop the language competences of its participants through getting to know culture. We suggest a Biology-Chemistry teacher to this course, who is learning at university for her Englisg degree and her development is crucial as she has taken over the teaching of Chemistry in English in our bilingual programme. We are planning a two-week intensive English language course for two of our Biology-Chemistry teachers who are among the most active organizers of international projects in our school. Their course: Activate Your English for Teaching starts to prepare them to the teaching of their subjects in English in the near future. To help their preparation for the courses, two English teachers from our school are giving them one-to-one tuition, besides their own private lessons. Their course is organised by English Matters and takes place in Leeds. Alpha College in Dublin offers a course which develops ICT skills through making use of technology tools. This is fundamental and fits the profile of our grammar school, so with the participation of an English-History teacher, we could reach a threefold aim with this course: improvement in computer skills, methodological development and language practice. This course combines the use of ICT tools in education with exploring the Irish culture and the educational system of Ireland. With the participation of seven teachers in this project, our whole institution will benefit a lot as our students will get more modern education with the help of creative methodology, while our colleagues can gain experience and new teaching ideas indirectly, not to mention the enthusiasm and inspiration for their further work. Making a distinction between the short and long-term effects of a project is not easy as the boundaries can be blurred. The reviving enthusiasm of the teachers and the renewal in their profession will bring immediate results in the teaching process of the school, which will probably last for long. The whole teaching staff will benefit from the project as we can refresh the common work by new methods and ideas.
