Mobility Advising - A way to stimulate motivation for mobility among adult learners
For many years now, mobility programmes have been an integral part of the EU strategy to motivate people to improve their personal development and employability. However, people seem to be reluctant to pursue educational opportunities outside their own country. Thus, the question is how to develop adult learners’ willingness to become more flexible and consider mobility as part of their lifelong learning. The assumption of the project was that access to, and the delivery of appropriate information is crucial for fostering adult learners’ readiness to engage in educational mobility.Accordingly, the aim of the partnership entitled “Mobility Advising – A way to stimulate motivation for mobility among adult learners” was to explore the common barriers to adult learners’ mobility and work towards the establishment of trained ‘mobility specialists’ in educational institutions as a means to expand mobility for learning purposes. Adult education providers from 7 countries were involved in this partnership, ranging from public educational entities to private vocational training centres and consulting services: institutions from BG, CY, DE, LT, PL, RO, and UK. The project´s work began by researching an inventory of the various existing mobility programmes. A structured questionnaire was used to interview more than 300 learners on their conceived barriers to educational mobility. The findings were summarized in a report giving an interesting insight on common obstacles to mobility. Furthermore, a Competence Profile for mobility advisors and a handbook for practitioners was produced in order to give answers to common questions relating to educational mobility as well as to inform on successful strategies for overcoming barriers to mobility (MobAd Manual). Finally, the project led to the production of an Outline Curriculum for the further training of mobility advisors. Seven transnational meetings supported the work. All outcomes to be downloaded from project website and EST.
