PROJECT
FINISHED
The idea of the project was come about at a partnership building/training course activity for Youth Workers who work with young people who identify as LGBT* & come from different ethical, cultural & religious backgrounds, held in Ireland in June 2015. After discussion that youth workers in this area find themselves dealing more often with youth people who find themselves in a conflicting situation that might arise from one's sexual identity and their being part of a cultural, ethnic or religious minority that does not conceptualise gender and sexuality as it is presented and portrayed in mainstream discourse. It was very clear to the participants who attended this event that there was an urgent need of developing new skills and competences in order to improve their local work with LGBT* youth who are also part of ethnic, cultural and/or religious minorities. And we felt that is needed to happen sooner rather than later as Europe is now a very diverse and multicultural place. This project therefore aims at enhancing and improving the skills set, competences and knowledge of youth workers in dealing with multiple discrimination, issues of intersectionality, intercultural communication and gender and sexuality issues, as well as envisioning and creating practical tools for the support of LGBT* youths from ethnic, cultural or religious minorities. The project will also represent the chance to develop an international network of organisations working on this issue, and the activity will be the ideal platform for envisioning projects that will take place in the future. The final goal is to enhance the capabilities of European organisations in supporting LGBT* youth from ethnic, cultural or religious minorities.
