Missing Pieces - International Tietotie 2.0The aim of this project is to create a fully competent, international campus in Valkeakoski. Valkeakoski Tietotie Upper Secondary School will start offering a curriculum in English for both international and Finnish students starting in August 2017. The school has also applied for a IB world school status and is in the verification stage. If the status is not obtained, the school will function as an international school offering courses taught in English for both national and international students. The school has already signed contracts with foreign schools to start co-operation of this kind in August 2017. In order to succeed in this task, the staff at Valkeakoski Tietotie school needs strong support in mastering the English language in the subjects that are to be offered. Also, the school intends to provide high-quality web courses in English. The aim is to offer these courses via internet to all upper secondary school students in Finland. Thus Finnish and international students can improve their skills in both English and the subject matter. This integration of language skills and subject content is compatible with the new curriculum in Finland, LOPS2016.Our aim is to enable the teaching staff to participate in workhops and seminars in Europe in order to attain a more competent level of English and to create a novel curriculum, integrating the Finnish teaching know-how with the more innovative mind-set needed to become fully international. The most important task for the teaching staff is to become more fluent speakers of English and to improve their skills in written English. These skills would be best acquired in courses that integrate learning new teachings methods in their subject material (History, Social Sciences, Psychology etc.) with learning English, a.k.a. participating in courses taught in English.Job shadowing has proved to be an effective way of learning new methods and concrete processes of teaching. Our project seeks to create fruitful job shadowing partnerships with our existing network of European schools, the European School Network (hence ESN).In the future, our courses will be taught mostly to non-English speakers. Participating in European workshops is a very valuable experience for our teachers: listening to and communicating with course participants speaking non-native English varieties.The school management would participate in workshops and seminars in Europe in order to better understand and to attain the skills needed to succeed in creating an international institution. Our aim is to create distance-learning courses and programs that would attract virtual students from various countries.
