The population of Turku is 175 000 (2007), 5,2 % of the population are Swedish-speaking and about 9% of the population are imigrants. The purpose of the project is to promote tolerance and understanding between different culturese as well as enhance the integration process of the migrants living in Turku region. The main activities for EVS are: • to work with ethnical and cultural communities in regions; • to establish contacts with closed communities where it is difficult to distribute information and integration services; • to organise information meetings for migrants focusing on the issues concerning their integration into the Finnish labour market, society, and on supporting their community life; • to organize social, cultural, sport and informative undertakings; • to organize cultural activities, works with the Finnish media; • gaining a better knowledge of Finnish NGOs (through platforms and networks SONDIP is involved in); • taking part in the preparation and follow up of SONDIP projects, organizing events; • involving the volunteer in the necessary training sessions, seminars and study visits, relevant to their EVS project; • providing the necessary means for effective communication at all levels (local, regional, national, international) in order to establish and improve business and social relationships; • ensuring the volunteer takes part in regular Finnish language classes so that his/her work in the local environment is strengthened.
