Over the past decade, the European Union has developed a distinct international profile and has grown in economic and political power. At the same time, the Eurocrisis has brought a lot of ambiguous attention to the EU. And the complexities of regional multilevel governance are often not sufficiently acknowledged or understood. Policy-attentive research and engagement with civic stakeholders is needed in order to generate and disseminate useful knowledge about the EU and its policies. The Miami Florida-Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (MF-JMCE) will serve as a clearinghouse of expertise and competences on EU topics in Miami, the larger South Florida region and beyond. We propose a series of high-visibility academic activities that would bring together researchers and experts from the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. Our Centre will host annual workshops, roundtables and symposia, create a solid and meaningful network of EU scholars throughout the South Florida region and beyond, provide financial assistance to faculty and graduate students pursing research on the EU, sponsor undergraduates to participate in the Model EU; and create a freely accessible online knowledge portal of EU-related materials by regional, national and international experts for use by interested communities both locally and throughout the nation and the globe. Florida International University as one of the nation’s largest public research universities, with its diverse student body, its history as EU Center of Excellence, and its unique location in the U.S.’s third largest state is ideally situated to house the MF-JMCE. The research and teaching activities will engage FIU’s various area-studies centers and Miami’s consular, civic and business communities. We have tested evaluation and dissemination procedures in place and can rely on the support of South Florida’s universities, public schools and consulates. Our academic team has14 years of experience with the EUCEs in the US.
