Memory Park: a project for the recovery and fruition of First World War historical memory (Memory Park)
Start date: Aug 31, 2004, End date: Jul 30, 2007 PROJECT  FINISHED

The current project aims at setting up an area dedicated to the conservation of the historical evidence concerning the events that, during the First World War, took place in the Karst area in Slovenia and around Gorizia. After the end of the European cofinancing period, all the interventions should be integrated in and extended to the Austrian-Italian front, in order to develop a consistent enhancement of the common historical heritage. The memory park is intended as a shrine to a precious historical heritage, but its role is more important still from an educational point of view; moreover, one should not forget the possible use of the territory on the part of tourists and of the local population. Whilst recovering, enhancing and promoting the territory in a historical and cultural framework, the initiative creates a cultural tourism system, highlighting the landscape and several natural and archaeological sites involved in the project. The initiative serves also as a warning to future generations, so that these places - marked by the tragedies of the war - may foster a peaceful dialogue among peoples, especially in the framework of Community integration and of the eastward enlargement of the European Union. The intervention has several different aspects: the enhancement of the sites in a crossborder framework (thanks to the renovation work on the paths and the placing of signboards); a promotion work, through the dissemination of information on multimedia supports; the creation of an informative web site; the production of a promotional video.
