The Global Futures languages programme launched by the Education Minister for Wales hopes to inspire a new approach to modern foreign languages in schools in Wales. The programme calls upon schools to support each other in improving teaching and learning languages. This project aims to prepare teachers to meet the needs of Global Futures by offering teachers the opportunity to develop language competences in a wide number of European languages. Our project will focus on 5 strands. The needs of all consortium members are met in one of the strands and some members appear in more than one strand according to the needs of the individual.1. Primary school teachers with no foreign language but recognise the need to develop linguistic skills. 2. Primary school teachers who already teach a foreign language and would either like to improve their fluency or would like to introduce a further languages into their school. 3. Secondary teachers of MFL who would like to introduce a new language or improve their fluency in an additional language4. Secondary teachers of other subjects who would like to introduce CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning and refers to teaching subjects to students through a foreign language)5. Those who needs to learn a language for any additional reason e.g. to communicate with pupils and parents with little English, to communicate with partners abroad and other members of the wider community, to enhance eTwinning experiences.Over a 2 year period teachers from across Wales will take part in an extensive programme of language learning in order to improve their linguistic competences and cultural knowledge. The reasons and intentions behind each consortium member vary greatly and it is clear that much collaborative work will continue throughout the 2 year period in order to prepare many teachers fully.The training will take place in the European country of each individual language to maximise the cultural experience and, where possible, allow for visits to schools in the host country. The European Local Authority Network established by Cardiff Council is making these school visits possible and they will be incorporated wherever feasible encouraging a wider network of cooperation between schools.
