In order to meet the demands of special education children with immigrant background, the hospital school personnel need updated knowhow and possess of relevant methodology. For this purpose Vienna congress provides an excellent forum due to the longer history in intercultural education represented by Middle-European hospital pedagogies. Additionally, through our workshop we wish to arise conversation about the importance of learning emotional skills as an essential part in enhancing the intercultural interaction. As our experiences from arranging workshops in previous congresses have shown this improves firstly keyspeakers' and secondly the whole work community's professional development and competence in the field of international co-operation. Planning and implementing the workshop would serve the consultative work done both in the city of Oulu and in the wider region of Northern Finland. Also we would like to transmit our beneficial experiences and practices from our other international projects, carried out with other special education schools and supported by Cimo. We believe this encourages other special education schools to acknowledge international project to empower the children with special needs and furthermore to be an enriching element in school culture. Workshops will be carried out in such a manner that includes both theoretical and practical section concentrating into methodological approaches. The aim is that professionals participating the workshops will also have an opportunity to discuss and share good practices and methods with each others. Theme of the workshop would be “Emotional skills - gateway to intercultural interaction” and its content is based on the experiences and outcomes of Comenius project “FEEL” (2014-2016). Participating in HOPE congress enables multifaceted professional development. Up-to-date knowledge based on the international research and developing work is very efficient way to improve the proficiency of both participants and the whole work community. The increased professionalism in the field of multiculturalism and bilingualism will strengthen the quality and competences of special education both in Oulu area and within Northern Finland’s hospital pedagogues.
