Managing Yourself- Achievement, Inspiration, Motivation
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

As a certified European School the Berufskolleg Volksgartenstraße in Mönchengladbach encourages and supports students in developing a broad European perspective. Promoting mobility is especially emphasized. The project MY AIM- „Managing Yourself: Achievement, Inspiration, Motivation“- was directed at trainees and VET students. We offered 29 participants the possibility to do a work placement in another European country so that they could try out and put into practice their professional, linguistic and personal competences in new challenging contexts. MY AIM combined the central objectives promoted by the ERASMUS+-programme - lifelong learning, further development of employability, internationalisation of professional education as well as recognition and certification of learning outcomes – with a self-management approach. Most importantly this approach was meant to enhance the participants´ abilities to organize and influence their professional development actively, autonomously and self-confidently and to discover broader perspectives regarding their professional mobility. A further goal was to motivate cooperating companies to focus not only on professional skills, but also on personal competences. For our school one central priority was to expand our European profile and develop further our process of internationalisation. After two years we can conclude that the self-management concept, chosen as the central ingredient for managing the project, has proven itself to be a valid and workable approach in all phases and for all dimensions of the project. First, self-management techniques served as valuable tools for the participants to prepare their work placement autonomously. More importantly the (further) development of self-management competences could be observed as a central learning outcome. For all participants this meant that they considered themselves more independent and more self-confident after completing their stay abroad. This development was also confirmed by their instructors. Thus MY AIM, from the outset, demanded self-management competences, developing them at the same time. Another important effect is that, after the completion of the project, companies can now pinpoint the value of a work placement abroad much better. For our school the participants´initiatives to take the organisation of their work placement into their own hands has provided us with a high number of new international contacts. During a staff mobility we signed a bilateral agreement on future cooperations with a professional college in France. Our future ERASMUS-project MY AIM II- OUR AIM intends to implement all these experiences, insights and effects within a new framework: European learning contexts in combination with self-management techniques should further the internationalisation of specific educational sectors.
