Brekkubæjarskóli is elementary school with 420 students in the first to 10. Grade. There are many multilingual students in the school. Wishes have come from employees to grow in their work with the students and learn new practices.
The aim of the project is to strengthen the school staff to provide students with a multilingual environment in the school to give them opportunities equal to other students in Icelandic society. The aim is also to promote speech and language pathologist in his work as a consultant to motivate school staff and parents to offering students / children a multilingual environment in schoolwork and everyday life.
Participants will be speech and language pathologist, project manager in special services and 2 teachers in first class.
Visits and training in primary schools in Sweden and speech and language pathologist will take course in "Learning language and loving it" in London.
Speech and language pathologist and the project manager in special services will revise and update the structure and procedures in existing support groups for children that are having problems with learning Icelandic as a secondary language.
Speech and language pathologist will enhance their skills in providing teachers, school staff and parents of student’s advice on the acquisition and how to enrich the languages environment for multilingual students.
Teachers have the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills in practice to be able to offer students a multilingual environment.
Evaluation will be made on the structure of language stimulation groups in spring 2016 and 2017.
The assessment will take note form check list from teachers what they need to promote their work so they can offer a diverse and multilingual environment. The check list will change from time to time in this project. The assessment will also take place in the end of the project and to compare the first check list to the last one. How much the project have assist teachers in their work.
The project will be presented after each trip to the teachers' school staff and the principals.
