Look Beyond
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Apr 15, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Perception is a selective process because our senses and our memory are limited – we do not have the capacity to know and experience everything. The stimuli that surround us are infinite – the world is huge and made up of uncountable elements – but we can only capture a tiny portion of reality and we can only retain a tinier portion of that. ‘Perceiving’ means forming an opinion about others and about whatever surrounds us; it is an active process attempting to make sense of incoming information. The process of perceiving is continuous and unstoppable – whenever our conscience is awake, we perceive. The advantage of this is that we continuously learn from what surrounds us – we learn from past experience in order to anticipate the future, and thus act in a more appropriate way. The disadvantage is that we continuously stereotype – we base our opinions on our past experiences, i.e. in what we have learned through our cultural models and our own personal experiences, and we tend to make generalisations and judgements. We perceive and judge the world that surrounds us through our own cultural glasses. "Look Beyond", a 12-month long European Voluntary Service project, aims to provide its volunteers to perceive the world from a different perspective by breaking the stereotypes from their past experiences and cultural glasses by looking beyond the thing they perceive. The 2 volunteers who will be participating in the first activity of Znanstveno-raziskovalno zdruzenje za umetnost, kulturne in izobrazevalne programe in tehnologijo EPEKA, socialno podjetje in Maribor, Slovenia will be able to develop their past experiences on entrepreneurship and the other 2 volunteers who will be participating in the second activity of Kulturno Izobrazevalno Drustvo KIBLA in Maribor, Slovenia will be able to develop their past experiences on culture and art with different stimuli which will surround them. The volunteers in the "Look Beyond" project are the Turkish young people, aged between 20 - 26, are looking for opportunities to develop their professional competences and pastime knowledge and skills in the activities they belong to. Both of the organisations which will host the young people are experienced both on the youth work and their field: EPEKA's main field is youth entrepreneurship and KIBLA's is art and culture. They will provide the volunteers new competences on their field with group work, pair work, individual work, job shadowing, simulations, discussions, excursions, open space, brainstorming, self-reflection, appreciation of art, lecture, and many more with their contemporary and continuously developing notion at their works. With the new competences, the volunteers will be able to think critically, believe in their persuasive power, act creatively and look beyond their perceptions in their future works.
