Long Term European Volunteer Service in Cojep Inte..
Long Term European Volunteer Service in Cojep International
Start date: Aug 1, 2014,
End date: Feb 1, 2016
PROJECT
FINISHED
Last years we face the rise of racism and discriminatory behavior in the European countries. International organizations such as Council of Europe, United Nations declare about this problem through numerous reports and programs. Non-governmental organizations raise awareness in society about racist speeches, about violence, hatred or discrimination on the base of race, skin colour, language, religion, nationality or national or ethnic origin. Cojep International decided, instead of accusing the governments of a failure in the social inclusion policy, the Europe of the economic crises, to launch a project on racism watch, concentrating on European French speaking countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxemburg).
Our project is established in order to fight against discrimination and racism acts which are increasing dramatically nowadays due to the influence of political parties, media, prejudices and fears in society. This project is aimed to promote understanding of other cultures, for intercultural dialogue. We promote social inclusion policy and solidarity principles in order to avoid marginalization and discrimination of minority groups with different skin color, religious background, originated from immigration etc.
We have a few FIELDS OF WORK in the framework of this project based on current problematics and needs in society.
First of all, we organize support to people who have survived a discriminating situation. We have a hot line for telephone calls for those who have any difficulties and can call and tell us about them. We can help to people who have troubles with health services or administrative instances. We will provide a juridical consulting to people who apply to court on a matter of discrimination or racist attitude.
We also make monitoring of current situation in the society in order to work on crucial issues with specific Committees of such organization as OSCE, the Council of Europe (ECRI, Commissioner for Human Rights), the United Nations (CERD). For this we prepare a monthly report on current situation in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxemburg,; develop a juridical base on each country, make researches and lead a survey.
And the sector that we would like to propose to our volunteers to be totally involved is promotion of living together through cultural, sports, art, and student events. It would be organisation of exhibitions, cultural events, sports events for intercultural diversity, as well as national campaign against hate speeches online.
Each EVS volunteer would be free to contribute to any other field according to his/her interests and educational background. For example, our Italian candidate is very interested in the second sector, she expressed her motivation to her law studies by professional experience and develop knowledge received during her Erasmus exchange year in France at the law faculty.
For the outcomes we expect to educate the society on this topic, stop trivialization of everyday racism, recognition of insulting speech on the Internet as a legal offense, etc.
Due to current freedom of movement in the European Union, blurring of the borders, we live nowadays on a very multicultural, mixed continent. So there would be always a lot of work to do about cultural understanding, tolerance, respect of other confessions and religions.
