LOCAL IN GLOBAL is an international project in the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). It consists of one training and two youth encounters and is designed for 30 youth workers as well as 60 youngsters from Armenia, Bulgaria, Germany, Moldova, Poland and Ukraine that are motivated to enhance their theoretical, methodological, and transcultural competences. The context of the project is the specific political and societal relevance of Education for Sustainable Development for the overcoming of climate change. In particular, it addresses (a) the limited access of underprivileged youngsters to ESD activities, and (b) the high need for an exchange of best-practice methods among ESD actors. The aim of the project is to qualify youth workers in the field of ESD (training) and to introduce youngsters to the concept of sustainable development (youth encounters). In doing so, we not only focus on providing participants with a deeper understanding of sustainability but also on showing them concrete opportunities for action and motivating them to become actively involved in a socio-ecological transformation. At the heart of all three activities is the simulation game “Krapowa”. The setting is a small, post-industrial town that is coping with such problems as emigration, environmental pollution and high unemployment. The participants take the roles of different actors from the spheres of business, civil society and politics. Together they begin to transform Krapowa into a more democratic, solidary and sustainable place. They develop strategies, negotiate and commonly take decisions. Thus, they learn to cooperate, to take responsibility and to exploit their full potentials. Most importantly, the simulation game offers a safe learning space in which the participants can test their abilities without being judged. That has a positive effect on their self-esteem. With regards to the outcomes of the project, we expect the participants to get a deeper understanding of the complex nature that accompanies sustainable development. Moreover, we expect them to strengthen their professional profile and enhance their employability by improving their ability to work in a team, to communicate in a foreign languages or to navigate in a multi-cultural setting. In the long term, we expect the project to have a positive impact on the ESD activities of all project partners. This shall be achieved by an ongoing exchange of best-practice examples as well as by professional networking of youth workers and their organizations across national boundaries. We particularly expect to strengthen civil society actors in rural areas, to include more disadvantaged target groups into the sphere of ESD activities, and to refine the methodological repertoire.
