For a relatively high percentage of EU citizens, insufficient literacy/numeracy skills lead to an exclusion from social and occupational participation and to a loss of employment – due to increasingly complex job requirements even in sectors with low-qualification demands. Neither general education nor vocational training systems within many countries are prepared to provide adults with the necessary literacy/numeracy skills. Isolated technical-vocational training or literacy/numeracy education without any reference to vocational requirements is dominant.Literacy & vocation defined and implemented vocationally oriented literacy skills of adults, which have been investigated using current job-market requirements in a total of 10 occupational fields in branches with positive employment prospects for low qualified persons in the future. The following countries were involved in the project activities: Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain and the United Kingdom.
