Cyber bullying is a relatively new form of bullying which inflicts emotional harm in a quiet manner, working through different social media sites and different online forums and dating services. One of the main concerns in cyber-bullying is that open Internet platforms allow perpetrators to remain anonymous, promote their messages to a wide audience, but also to experience reduced responsibility and accountability compared to other forms of bullying. Different studies show that one out of every two lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) youth are regular victims of cyber bullying, causing psychological and emotional distress to victims and is exposing them to a higher risk of depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, self-injury and suicide attempt. A new study from the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) released in July of 2013 found that LGBT youth experience much higher rates of cyber bullying than their non-LGBT peers. It also found that the LGBT youth use the Internet at high rates to access resources and support. Main goal of this project is to gather 30 young LGBT people from significantly different cultural backgrounds (Cyprus and Ireland) in order to share their experiences on bullying and cyber bullying and to produce an e-book on how to avoid and deal with LGBT cyber bullying. Main objectives are: • to educate LGBT Community on the cyber bullying issue and provide them with accurate statistics and information • to actively engage young LGBT people in the prevention and education of the cyber bullying • to develop information booklet with specific guidelines on how to avoid and deal with LGBT cyber bullying that will be available in two different languages and available for download to a wide audience • to raise awareness of this issue within the LGBT community and to share it with the wider community and statutory sector • to empower LGBT youth to take an active role in their local communities • to provide an opportunities for a creative inter-cultural learning and dialogue between young LGBT people Project is composed in two phases: • “Exploring LGBT Cyber bullying”, 21-28 September 2014, Nicosia, Cyprus. During this visit participants will be focusing on collecting information, experiences and advices on how to recognize, avoid and overcome LGBT cyber bullying. • “Producing LGBT Cyber bullying e-book”, 5-12 October 2014, Dundalk, Ireland. This phase aims to produce e-book on LGBT Cyber bullying based on collected data in first phase of this project. Participant will also be involved in organising of the official launch of the e-book during this visit. During both phases, young people will take part in workshops where we will use non-formal and informal methods and techniques of learning, such as role play, debate, games, arts... In each visit one day will be dedicated to an excursion and cultural activities in Ireland and Cyprus. By participating in this project, we expect that participants will develop better understanding of different cultures and specific needs and issues they are dealing with. We expect that young people will feel encouraged and empowered to take active roles in similar initiatives and projects in their local communities and international projects. We also expect that each participants improve their communication, team work, decision making and different creative skills. This collaborative project is a starting point in developing similar projects, actions and strategies that address concerns and challenges that young LGBT people are faced by and hopefully a first step in creating specific solutions on how to overcome these issues. In long term, these type of actions will improve health and wellbeing of LGBT youth and community.
