LFEE Language Training
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The study of a foreign language became compulsory in September 2014, and because of this we aim to promote language learning and cultural awareness as an essential part of our curriculum. Our project aims to send our Modern Languages coordinator on a primary French immersion course. It will enable them to improve their confidence in French, allowing them to deliver more of their language lessons in the target language, and to provide planning support for all school staff. We also expect the course to support the development of an appropriate methodology for teaching languages to young learners. We are a large primary school in inner London, so this project will directly impact over 240 children and 50 staff. The staff member we have chosen to attend the immersion course has a proven aptitude for languages, having studied Spanish and Portuguese to degree level. They have an appropriate level in French to be able to understand and participate fully in an immersive course, and have the capacity to quickly learn new vocabulary and teaching ideas. Our school has done much groundwork in embedding language learning and cultural awareness into the curriculum, by organising whole school country studies, trips to Europe and participation in events such as the European Day of Languages and International Mother Language Day. Further language training would do much to improve the quality and scope of our language teaching. We would expect the project to inform future staff training within and outside of our school, also providing training to other schools and colleagues within the borough through shared planning, observations and team teaching. We envisage the project will improve the participant's and other staff members language skills, and help to promote cultural awareness of contemporary France. Planning of future learning experiences will be informed by this project, and we hope that by incorporating new skills and methodology learnt as part of the course, that children's learning will be positively impacted for years to come. In improving the skills of a key staff member responsible for language learning in our school, we hope that we will be able to share this good practice throughout our local authority once we have fully realised our own vision for language teaching at Seven Mills primary school.
