Let's Play Chemistry

The aim of this application was to increase students' motivation to study Chemistry by involving them to introduce new, educational games in the teaching of Chemistry and creating an online strategic game with only the supervision of their teachers. The project focused on three main fields: basic (Austria),organic (Hungary) and analytic (Romania) chemistry concentrating especially on those fields that the students don't like or have difficulties with, as the aim of this application was to increase motivation.Students from year 9 to 13 were involved. Therefore first we determined these difficulties by asking the students what area and why they found difficult and how they thought their teachers could help them. Afterwards the teachers presented, organized and had the students try out various educational games and asked them to create similar games of their own with the help of their teachers. After evaluating the effectiveness of this process and selecting the best games, the partners continually exchanged and tried out each others games in their institutions. During the project meetings the partners constantly discussed the problems, good and bad experiences, evaluated the project, selected the best games from all 3 fields . The games form the part of the strategic game created by the students who gradually developed and tested the game, which would consists of stages that are logically built on each other. Between the project meetings the 3 schools evaluated, created, tested, tried out and exchanged new games and also developed and tested the strategic game via regular Skype conferences. The meetings were not only about work: we were making friends when we visited Budapest, enjoyed the thermal baths of Eger, took trips to the wonderful towns of Transylvania, Vienna and Salzburg, attended a Ribbon Pinning Ceremony and Opera performances. We visited universities, factories and an interactive science museum, and tested the world’s first automatically baked pizza.
