Let's become a bilingual family!
Start date: Dec 1, 2010,

Encouraging early bilingualism is one of the main objectives of the EU. Involving parents can have a significant impact on children's foreign language acquisition. In fact parents spend a lot of time with their children and can follow their language development throughout the years, offering them input. Parents can leverage the emotional bond to make learning fun and engaging, creating the conditions for a really enriching learning experience. There is a strong desire among parents to help their children learn a second language, but they lack confidence and tools to do so. The objectives are to: 1.create awareness that parents can help children learn a second language from infancy onwards; 2. provide parents with practical tools to help their children learn a second language from an early age onwards. The methodology that will be used, the Narrative Format approach, developed in the project "The Adventures of Hocus and Lotus" does not require parents to be fluent in the second language; this approach has been used successfully in many schools in Europe; 3. provide the parents with a continuous support during the project, otherwise they will easily lose confidence and motivation; 4. share a new approach to learning, based on communication and sharing rather than on performance; 5. collect data on early language learning in the family. The outputs will be:1. Information material to explain to parents early language acquisition, why it is important and why they can play a key role in it.2. Training material on how to implement the suggested methodology; 3. An ICT platform where parents share their reflections on the project, keeping them motivated and helping them to improve their techniques; 4. A research report. The long term impact will be new awareness of parents on their role in helping children acquiring foreign languages. They will acquire more confidence in their abilities and will become more creative in offering language input to their children and the foreign language will become a long term family project.
