Learning teachers
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project is planned for training activities abroad for 8 teachers and 1 member of the school management team (9 in total) of Riga State Gymnasium No 2; 9 courses have been selected in the following 4 areas: 1. CLIL training for bilingual subject teachers (focus on science teachers), 2. Application of ICT for teaching various subjects, 3. Improvement of teaching methods and styles, 4. Improvements in School leadership. One of the overall objectives for the school is to improve study results in sciences (Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry) for 5-10% and get ready for the compulsory centralized graduation exams in science. The 2nd objective: Training for the bilingual teachers is a necessity because the school has just received an authorization for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Secondary school) and is planning to receive also an authorization for the Middle Years Programme (Elementary school) by the end of 2015. More than 30 teachers are involved in these new programmes. The international programme is integrated into the national curriculum and requires bilingual (English/Latvian) teachers. The new international programme requires also wide application of various ICT technologies and integrated approach for teaching the IB subjects. It is also quite a challenge for the school management team where considerable improvements are required. The objective is to improve the most necessary skills: English language, ICT skills, methods of teaching. The school is well equipped with modern ICTs and the teachers are really motivated to acquire the new generation technologies. The 9 training courses will be planned over the period of 2 years, each course 5-10 days long. All the course participants will share their knowledge and the new acquired skills with others teachers in the school as well as with the teachers in other schools of Riga (masterclasses) and other State Gymnasiums in Latvia. The project is essential. The courses selected are for developing the skills which cannot be acquired in Latvia due to very limited and narrow offer. There is no offer for bilingual (English/Latvian) teaching method in Latvia and very limited offer for interdisciplinary approach. Essential will be also face-to-face communication in English with the tutors and other course participants. This training will be also a good motivation for the teachers who work long hours and devote most of their time to school.
