Oaklands Community College is in need of inspiration from Europe. A rural school, based in an industrial town, Oaklands has never looked before to Europe to improve and progress - this is about to change. Our staff is very young, motivates and successful, willing to change their teaching to improve the student's learning and school experience. Management is supportive and willing to explore new avenues in terms of student support.We are a DEIS school which means that a high percentage of our student population come from low socio-economic backgrounds. We need to change our teaching to support these students and make them realise that there is an entire world of opportunity out there. Through staff training courses in Europe in the area of languages, mathematics, science and the arts, it is hoped that the staff will be better equipped to deal with the different styles of learners in the classrooms and differentiate properly. Language training will be important as this is an area that needs expansion beyond the one European language we currently teach. 1 members of staff will participate in training courses and this is divided out among various departments.We also plan job-shadowing which will give both management and staff a much greater understanding of best practices in Europe realting to teaching, learning and staff management. This project particularly focuses on balancing the teaching and learning in the classroom, differentiating for different learners in the classroom and how management structures support students' wellbeing. Countries often help up with high regard are Finland, Denmark and Iceland and this is why we have applied for these specific countries. 10 members of staff will job-shadow and disseminate information regarding this aspect of the project.We hope that the results will plant the seed for continued growth in Oaklands. Teachers will return and teach each other, both internally and externally. Students will feel more positive in the classroom with an active approach to learning. Staff will become confident and comfortable with AFL techniques and creative learning, which will in turn support our new Junior Cycle framework in school. Education is all about the students and in sending teachers to Europe, we hope to open more doors for future opportunities and make Oaklands a school where each student has a positive learning experience.
