„Language Connects“ is a project which deals with the support and appreciation of multilingualism in primary school. This topic is highly relevant for the Austrian education system: In Austria 2013/14 the percentage of children with other first languages than German in primary school was 25,6%, in Vienna it was 54,6% (BMBF [2014]: Informationsblatt Nr. 2: SchülerInnen mit anderen Erstsprachen als Deutsch: Statistische Übersicht; Schuljahre 2006/07-2012/13. Wien: BMBF.). At the focus of the project “Language Connects” are methodology and didactics of language teaching, especially regarding German as a Second language, first language classes and English.
Significantly involved in „Language Connects“ will be headmistress Gerlinde Holzinger and a team consisting of eight class teachers, team teachers and a special education teacher.
The project duration will be 12 months, it starts July 1st, 2015 and ends July 1st, 2016. First, the team will participate in different teacher training courses on language, multiculturalism and education:
o Elisabeth Köbke, „The Future of School“, Prague Summer School
o Anna Niemirowicz und Eva Rottmann, „Immersion Course in Scotland for Teachers of English“, LFEE Europe
o Manuela Lenker, Bettina Fugger und Derya Cicek, „Interactive teaching - Using educational games in order to enhance learners’ motivation”, Institution Eruditus Oslo
o Maria Mechtler, „CLIL - Practical Methodology for teachers working with CLIL”, eti Malta
o Gabriela Poledniczek, „Neue Ressourcen für den Unterricht“, lifelonglearning Slowenia
The outcomes will be disseminated formally, through conferences, jours fixes, internal project meetings, eTwinning and school website, and informally, through conversation with colleagues in primary school Rötzergasse. A collection of materials on project relevant topics will be offered, accessible for all teachers at school. Further, the teacher library will be extended with specialist literature.
Within the project “Language Connects” teachers shall be sensitized regarding multilingualism and multiculturalism. They shall be advised to use new methods in language teaching.
The process of internationalization in primary school Rötzergasse and the networking with other schools in Europe will be promoted.
An important target group of “Language Connects” are the pupils of primary school Rötzergasse. Multilingualism is of high importance, 93% of the children have another first language than German.
The appreciation of different languages and cultures, the cooperation with other European schools and the use of new methods in language teaching shall have positive effects on the learning processes of the pupils.
The internationalization of primary school Rötzergasse not only influences teachers, also the children shall experience the European dimension and become active European citizens. Furthermore, the pupils will spread their experiences within their communities. The local community will also be addressed through the use of eTwinning, the school website and local media.
The project “Language Connects” will encourage our facility, the teachers, pupils and local community to discuss the importance of language and cultures and will help realising the European dimension in primary school Rötzergasse.
