PROJECT
FINISHED
In this project as a secondary school we'd like to focus on language and CLIL skills acquisition teachers.
Bilingual Education plays an important role in our school, we call it 'VéTO - Versterkend Talenonderwijs'. Dedicated teachers teach their subjects in English, and the English department has two streams: regular English and Cambridge English. Through projects, exchanges and studyweeks in England we focus on cultural aspects and language. What we see with our students is a positive attitude to languages in general, the connection with the different subjects and the appreciation for the challenge we offer for the gifted students (FCE-exam in year 3) and/or very motivated students (exchange programme with our partnerschool in Hungary). If we compare our exam results now to the results 10 years ago, we really made big progress! People tend to choose our school more often than usual for this as well. What we need is the constant need to keep up with language and CLIL skills for both non-language teachers as teachers of English.. We would love to have more opportunities for foreign job-shadowing in the future.
These two years we want eight of our VéTO-teachers to improve their English and CLIL skills in Britian spread over two years and four groups. Our objectives are to keep our teachers motivated, to boost their confidence as an English speaker and last but not least, to help them to keep their English level high. Teaching classes with a lower level has the pitfall of always using simple English. Well trained and motivated teachers can motivate our students too and be European rolemodels for them.
The assessment of the results will be diverse. First there will be the intervision meetings in which experiences are shared. Secondly, the coordinator will discuss the outcome of the trainings with the participants based on their objectives beforehand and check the implementation in the classes. Thirdly, parents and students will receive the annual questionnaire about different aspects of our school, supplemented with relevant questions on VéTO. The results will be published in 'Vensters ter verantwoording' on our website.
