Kogukonnateater kurtidega
Start date: Aug 1, 2013,
The project "Community Theatre for the Deaf" is aimed at young deaf people who are interested in theatre. The project will take place as a creative camp in the Harju county on 12-18 of August 2013. Project’s main goal is to give an opportunity for young deaf to express important issues through Community Theatre methods. Through the improvisational means of theatre and together with a professional director they will compose a performance, which is also presented to the public.During the week in the creative camp, there will be daily workshops where the participants will learn movement, feeling their body, developing the sense of rhythm, working in a group, and through creative exercises and games, they will learn acting skills. Together they will discuss important subjects for the deaf community, after which they will concentrate and analyse more specifically one selected theme. As a result, the performance that was prepared together will be completed and it will be performed on the venue on the last day of the creativity camp for the participants’ family and friends, local people and those interested in theatre. Later the play will be performed during September and October in theaters or cultural institutions in Tallinn, Tartu and, if possible, in other Estonian towns as well (for example, Viljandi and Pärnu). With the initial prognosis, the theatre performance will be seen by approximately 200-250 people (with 3 to 4 performances). The project is organised by four young people who are integrating their different specialities acquired in the university and putting them into practice. In addition to intensive theatre workshops, the organisers would like to offer the participants a good and cultural time in the creative camp. They will organise summertime activities, sport games, hiking, playing boardgames, a handicraft workshop, a meeting with one well-known young theatre person, and watch an improvisational and wordless play by an actively operating theatre group. The project is open to every young deaf people from all over Estonia who are interested in theatre, but as the project is taking place in Harju county, it will be mostly directed at the deaf people of the region of North-Estonia. There can be up to 26 participants in the creativity camp, in the ages between 18-35 years. According to estimates, there are about 80-90 active young deaf people in Estonia, based on the number of members of the Estonian Deaf Young People Organisation. Registration to the creativity camp will be on the principal of fastest response, the participants do not have to pay any participation fees or any other expenses related to the camp. The priority of the organisers is that those who are interested, should have the opportunity to practise and be involved in theatre regardless of their financial resources.Community Theatre is a theatre practice which, among others like Forum Theatre, Interactive Theatre and Playback Theatre, belongs to the Applied Theatre and Drama. Community Theatre offers the opportunity to create theatre plays based on the needs and stories which deserve to be shared and discussed. Community Theatre can be all different kinds of theatrical performances, but the connecting purpose is the concentration on the well-being of a specific community. The usefulness of Community Theatre lies in its potential to be a driving force for social change, to encourage the members of the community to communicate truthfully and openly, to give people the opportunity to understand themselves through the creative means of theatre, and to keep alive the heritage, traditions and customs of the community. This form of theatre allows to deal with focus on people and their stories (including problematic issues), to participate together in the performance process and introduce collectively the subjects that matter and conditions important to the community.
