Kansalaisopistot oppivina organisaatioina
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

“Adult education centres as places of learning” is a cooperation project between three Finnish adult education centres. The centres are situated in South Savo and include Mäntyharju adult education centre as the coordinator and Pieksämäen Seutuopisto and Mikkeli adult education centres. The centres employ altogether around 440 staff, of which 420 are part-time teachers and lectures and 20 are full-time employees. The centres have altogether about 13,200 students, mainly adults. The main teaching areas are fine arts and crafts, languages, IT, social and educational subjects, physical education and health and well-being. The three adult education centres (Mäntyharju Pieksämäki and Mikkeli) have also been working in cooperation before in the issues of quality and development. The cooperation is believed to be beneficial in starting international development projects. As adult education centres have a variety of teaching areas and a great number of part-time teachers, it is difficult for teachers to receive peer support in the same field in one's own centre. However, the aims for pedagogical and professional development and international cooperation are very similar. The cooperation between the three adult education centres and the peer support found in them is expected to encourage the teachers and other staff to develop their professionalism and internationalism. The aims of the project are to develop language skills and general skills demanded in international cooperation, to discover and make use of professional innovations, to enhance pedagogical knowledge and IT skills and to spread this knowledge and these skills among the teachers and students of the centres. The project will include international training seminars in the chosen fields and benchmarking visits to international partner schools and centres. The project will last for two years and each Finnish adult education centre will attempt to send at least one representative to each training seminar and benchmarking visit, which is believed to give the best support to the professional growth of novices in the international field. The project themes will mainly be connected with teachers' pedagogical knowledge and IT skills, flexible study possibilities for adult students and the presentation of students' and teachers' know-how.
