The main purpose of this project is to improve the quality of life for the population through the provision of a healthy and favourable environment and the preservation of the rich nature heritage on the basis of sustainable management of the environment. Activities of this proposal briefly include: flood risk assessment, flood mapping (identification of the areas at risk of flooding), elaboration of flood risk management plans (plans to reduce flood risks), elaboration of a Flood Early Warning System and Water Retention system in the Paggaion Municipality (Greece) as well as flood risk mitigation in Borino (Bulgaria) which will be implemented through the construction of retaining walls and covering of the river banks and the river bed of Borinska river in order to stop the sedimentation of the bed of the river and erosion and landslides on both banks of the river. The commonly developed research and publicity will allow better understanding of the threats which both municipalities are facing. Expected Results: Expected Results:• Established cooperation in the field of active water management and flood risk prevention• Established partnership networks needed for addressing the environmental problems, prevention of natural and man-made catastrophes.• Elaboration of Socio-economic impact and vulnerability study related to flood and landslide hazards.• Elaboration of a strategy for citizen training and information on disaster responsiveness.• Dissemination module on the results and lessons learned implemented.
