The University of Victoria has established itself as the hub of European Union studies on the west coast of Canada. This proposed Jean Monnet European Union Centre of Excellence (JM EUCE) seeks to bring together the commitment of our three past Jean Monnet Chairs, faculty from diverse departments, and previous European Union Centres of Excellence to promote, advance and build excellence in the studies of European Integration at UVic and increase the visibility of the European Union in British Columbia. The activities in this proposal address topics that are of great interests to Canadians and fundamental to understand current achievements and integration in the EU. This Centre of Excellence will bring together teaching and research excellence on EU integration through institutionalizing a new course on EU culture and identities, hosting an accessible downtown lecture series, providing grants for students to conduct fieldwork and research in the EU, and holding a public forum on identity, migration and borders public policies in a Canada-EU comparative perspective.
